This Local Government Classification Scheme is published on behalf of the Records Management Society of Great Britain, Local Government Group (opens in new window). It has been issued to support local authorities in the areas of Data Protection, Freedom of Information and the Local Government Act. Its objective is to promote improved records management practices within local government.
Version 2.00 has updated the mapping to the Integrated Public Service Vocabulary and has added retention guidance to the scheme.You can still refer back to the superseded version if necessary.

The structure of the XML representation of LGCS is based on an extension to the Taxonomy.xsd schema that adds additional elements to accommodate records management specific information. These elements represent records management information provided by the Records Management Society of Great Britain, Local Government Group (opens in new window) in a simple string format. The representation currently used may change in the future to comply e-Government Unit Metadata Technical Working Group recommendations on representing eGMS records management elements (including disposal) in XML. It is also anticipated that lists will be represented in the W3C Simple Knowledge Organisation System (SKOS) format with suitable RDF extensions.
