This Local Government Classification Scheme (LGCS) is published on behalf of the Records Management Society of Great Britain, Local Government Group (opens in new window). It has been issued to support local authorities in the areas of Data Protection, Freedom of Information and the Local Government Act. Its objective is to promote improved records management practices within local government.
Version 2.00 has updated the mapping to the Integrated Public Service Vocabulary and has added retention guidance to the scheme.
Version 2.01 was published 28th December 2006.
Version 2.02 is a final minor update. The main changes are around updating the LGCS IPSV to be more consistent and ensure every class is mapped to at least one IPSV term. You can still refer back to the superseded version if necessary.
Version 2.03 is a slight correction to the LGCS IPSV mapping XML file: please see the document Summary of changes between LGCS 2.03 and 2.03 for further details. You can still refer back to version 2.02 if necessary.
LGCS version 2.03 was released on 25th Feb 2008:

Click here for a diagrammatic representation of the XML resources making up LGCS. Associated schemas and XSLT resources are also given, with hyperlinks to each.
The structure of the XML representation of LGCS is based on an extension to the Taxonomy.xsd schema that adds additional elements to accommodate records management specific information. These elements represent records management information provided by the Records Management Society of Great Britain, Local Government Group (opens in new window) in a simple string format. The representation currently used may change in the future to comply e-Government Unit Metadata Technical Working Group recommendations on representing eGMS records management elements (including disposal) in XML. It is also anticipated that lists will be represented in the W3C Simple Knowledge Organisation System (SKOS) format with suitable RDF extensions.
Please post questions and comments on the 'Controlled Lists - Local Government Classification Scheme (LGCS) and Records Management Issues Forum' of the esd-toolkit at /forums/viewforum.php?f=80.
If you are unable to use the esd-toolkit, comments can be sent by e-mail to standards@esd-toolkit.org.
If you create your own XSLT for the List, please send it to us so it can be made available to others via this site.
